The cycle finished and the machine went quiet, but the bottom of your Bosch dishwasher is still full of standing water. Maybe it is showing an E24 error on the display. Maybe it has been draining slowly for weeks and now stopped entirely. Whether your Bosch dishwasher is not draining at all, leaving water in the basin after every cycle, or cutting out mid-wash, this guide covers every cause we see across Halifax. Bosch dishwashers have one significant advantage over most other brands when it comes to drain faults: the drain pump cover is accessible from the front without pulling the machine out, which means one of the most common causes can be fixed in under fifteen minutes without moving anything.
- Clogged filter and sump area (most common, free to fix)
- Blocked or kinked drain hose
- Garbage disposal knockout plug not removed (common after new installations)
- Debris blocking the drain pump impeller (often mistaken for pump failure, fix without replacing the pump)
- Failed drain pump
- Control board fault
Cause 4 is the most distinctive Bosch-specific cause on this list. Many homeowners who see an E24 error assume the drain pump has failed and needs replacing. In many cases, the pump motor is perfectly fine and the impeller simply has debris wrapped around it. This guide covers how to check and clear it without replacing any parts.

Clogged Filter and Sump Area
What it is: Bosch dishwashers use a multi-part filter system at the base of the tub that catches food debris before it reaches the drain pump. The filter assembly consists of a coarse mesh outer filter and a fine cylindrical inner filter. When these clog with food particles, grease, and mineral deposits, water cannot pass through to the pump and sits in the basin after every cycle.
Bosch recommends cleaning the filter regularly as part of standard maintenance. In Halifax, we recommend every three weeks. Nova Scotia’s municipal water supply has higher mineral content than most inland Canadian cities, and that calcium combines with food residue and detergent to build up on the filter mesh faster than the standard cleaning interval assumes. The Bosch filter access process is tool-free, making regular maintenance straightforward once you know the steps.
Symptoms:
- Standing water in the bottom of the tub after every cycle
- Dishes coming out with a gritty film or food particles still attached
- Musty smell from inside the dishwasher between uses
E24error code displayed (see the error code section below)- Draining has become progressively slower over several weeks
- Unplug the dishwasher and remove the bottom rack.
- Locate the spray arm at the bottom of the tub. On most Bosch models it lifts straight up or unclips without any tools. Remove it and set it aside.
- The filter assembly is now visible at the centre of the tub floor. Grip the cylindrical inner filter, rotate it counter-clockwise, and lift it straight out.
- Lift the flat coarse mesh filter out from underneath.
- Rinse both pieces under warm running water. Use a soft brush or toothbrush to scrub the mesh. For calcium deposits, soak in undiluted white vinegar for 15 minutes before scrubbing.
- Look into the sump cavity and wipe out any visible debris with a damp cloth.
- Reinstall the coarse filter first, then insert and twist the cylindrical filter clockwise to lock. Replace the spray arm, reinstall the rack, plug in, and run a short rinse cycle to confirm drainage.
Bosch’s official guide demonstrates the complete filter removal and cleaning process:
Blocked or Kinked Drain Hose
What it is: The drain hose carries water from the pump to a standpipe or garbage disposal under the sink. A sharp kink anywhere along the hose or a grease buildup inside it stops water flow entirely. The pump runs but nothing drains. This problem most often appears after the dishwasher has been moved, or when new cabinetry has been installed around it.
Under the Nova Scotia Building Code, dishwasher drain connections must maintain specific clearance and depth requirements to prevent backflow. In older Halifax and Dartmouth apartments, standpipes are often narrower than current code requires. If the drain hose is inserted more than 7 inches (18 cm) into the standpipe, it creates a siphon effect that either prevents draining or pulls dirty water back into the tub between cycles. This costs nothing to fix once identified.
Symptoms:
- Pump runs audibly but water level does not drop
- Problem appeared after the dishwasher was moved or kitchen work was done
- Dirty water reappears in the tub between cycles
- Shut off power at the breaker and the water supply valve under the sink.
- Open the cabinet under the sink and trace the drain hose from the dishwasher to its connection point.
- Check the full length of the hose for sharp bends or kinks, particularly where it passes through cabinet walls.
- Confirm the hose has a high loop, rising up to the underside of the counter before descending to the drain. A hose running straight down without looping will siphon water back into the tub.
- If connecting to a standpipe, confirm the hose is not inserted more than 7 inches into the pipe.
- Disconnect the hose and pour water into the open end to confirm free flow. A blocked hose needs to be cleared or replaced.
- Reconnect, restore power and water, and run a test cycle.
Garbage Disposal Knockout Plug Not Removed
What it is: If your Bosch dishwasher was recently installed and has never drained properly from the first use, check for a garbage disposal knockout plug before assuming any component has failed. When a dishwasher drain hose connects to a garbage disposal, there is a factory-installed plastic plug inside the disposal’s dishwasher inlet port that must be knocked out before the hose is connected. If an installer skips this step, water from the dishwasher has nowhere to go.
This is a universal installation issue across all dishwasher brands. The full removal process is the same regardless of brand and is covered in detail in our Frigidaire dishwasher not draining guide and our Whirlpool dishwasher not draining guide.
Symptoms:
- Dishwasher has never drained since it was installed
- A garbage disposal was installed at the same time as the dishwasher
- Wash cycle runs normally but drain cycle produces no water movement
Debris Blocking the Drain Pump Impeller
What it is: This is the most important Bosch-specific cause to understand, and the one that prevents the most unnecessary pump replacements. The drain pump impeller is the rotating blade inside the pump that generates the pressure to push water out of the tub. When a small piece of debris lodges against the impeller, the pump motor runs but the impeller cannot spin freely. Water goes nowhere, and the machine throws an E24 error.
On Bosch dishwashers, the drain pump cover is accessible directly from the front of the machine without pulling it out from under the counter. Once the outer door panel is removed, the kickpad taken off, and the insulation layer pulled back, the round drain pump cover is visible and reachable by hand. Press the retaining tab, rotate the cover to release it, and you can inspect and clear the impeller directly. In many cases, removing the debris and replacing the cover resolves the problem completely without replacing any parts.
Symptoms:
E24error code displayed, filter is clean, drain hose is clear- Pump makes a humming or straining sound during the drain phase but water does not move
- Problem appeared suddenly after a cycle that may have included bone-in meat or fragile dishware
- Unplug the dishwasher and shut off the water supply.
- Open the dishwasher door fully. Along the inner edge of the outer door panel, locate the screws securing the panel. Remove them and carefully separate the outer door panel from the inner door liner. Set it aside.
- Close the door. The kickpad at the base of the machine is now accessible. Remove the kickpad screws and take it off.
- You will see a layer of insulation material covering the base of the machine. Pull it back or remove it to expose the drain pump assembly.
- Locate the round drain pump cover. Press the retaining tab inward and rotate the cover counter-clockwise to release it. The cover will pull straight out.
- With the cover removed, you can see and reach the impeller directly. Look for any debris wrapped around it or lodged against the blades. Remove it carefully with needle-nose pliers or a small hook.
- Try spinning the impeller by hand. It should rotate freely with minimal resistance. If it spins freely after clearing the debris, replace the cover, reassemble, and run a test cycle.
Failed Drain Pump
What it is: If the impeller is clear and spins freely but the machine still will not drain, the pump motor itself has failed. The motor can burn out from extended operation against a jammed impeller, from general wear over years of use, or from an electrical fault. A burned-out motor produces complete silence during the drain phase. A pump with damaged windings may hum without generating any flow.
Two access routes for Bosch drain pump replacement:
Front access (inspection and impeller work): As described in Cause 4, the pump cover is reachable from the front after removing the outer door panel, kickpad, and insulation. This route works well for clearing debris and inspecting the impeller. For full pump replacement, the space is tight and the wiring harness connections are at awkward angles in this position.
Side tilt access (full pump replacement): For replacing the pump assembly entirely, the more practical approach is to pull the machine out from under the counter, disconnect the 120V hardwired power connection at the wall junction box, shut off and disconnect the water inlet line, and carefully tip the machine onto its side. With the machine tipped, the base tray can be removed to expose the full underside and the pump assembly is straightforwardly accessible for replacement.
Symptoms:
- Impeller confirmed clear and spinning freely, but machine still will not drain
- Complete silence during the drain phase where pump noise is expected
E24orE25error persisting after filter clean and impeller check
This video covers the Bosch dishwasher drain pump removal and replacement process in detail:
Control Board Fault
What it is: The control board sends the electrical signal that activates the drain pump at the correct point in each cycle. If the board fails to send that signal, the pump receives no power and the machine sits with a full basin of water. The wash phase may run normally and no obvious mechanical fault is present.
This is the last cause to consider because it is the least common and the most expensive. Work through Causes 1 through 5 before concluding the board is the problem.
Symptoms:
- All components test as functional but the drain pump never activates
- Multiple unrelated error codes appearing together
- Machine stalls at the same point in every cycle with no explanation from component testing
Bosch Dishwasher Error Codes Related to Draining
| Error Code | What It Means | Recommended Action |
|---|---|---|
E24 |
Drain timeout. The machine ran the drain pump longer than expected without completing drainage. The most common drain-related code on Bosch dishwashers. | Clean the filter first. If the filter is clear, check the drain pump impeller for debris (Cause 4) before assuming the pump has failed. |
E25 |
Drain pump blocked or cover not seated correctly. Often appears alongside or alternating with E24. | Check that the drain pump cover is fully seated and locked. Then inspect the impeller for debris. E25 can also appear if the pump cover was recently removed and not reseated properly. |
E24 and E25 together |
When both codes appear in the same fault sequence, the control board is detecting both a drain timeout and a pump obstruction signal. This combination almost always points to a jammed impeller rather than a failed pump motor. | Clear the impeller following the steps in Cause 4. If both codes clear after the impeller is cleaned, no pump replacement is needed. |

Should You Repair or Replace Your Bosch Dishwasher?
According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, water damage from household appliances is one of the leading causes of home insurance claims across Atlantic Canada, with dishwashers among the most common sources. A Bosch dishwasher that is not draining puts ongoing stress on the pump, hoses, and door seals. Addressing the fault promptly prevents a small drain issue from becoming a water damage claim.
Rule 1: The 50% Rule. If the total repair cost (parts plus labour) exceeds 50% of the price of a comparable new Bosch dishwasher, replacement is usually the better long-term financial decision.
Rule 2: The Lifespan Rule. Bosch dishwashers typically last 10–13 years with regular maintenance. If your machine is under 7 years old, repair almost always makes sense. Over 10 years old with a major component failure, replacement deserves serious consideration.
Rule 3: The Recurring Failure Rule. If this is the second or third component failure within 18 months, the machine is in general decline. Isolated failures are normal. A pattern of failures is not.
At Mapleland Appliance, we assess the dishwasher, explain exactly what has failed, give you a clear repair quote, and tell you honestly whether fixing or replacing makes more financial sense. No pressure either way. Call us and we will tell you straight.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to fix a Bosch dishwasher not draining in Halifax?
It depends on the cause. Cleaning a clogged filter costs nothing. Clearing debris from the drain pump impeller also costs nothing if you are comfortable with outer door panel removal. A drain hose adjustment or replacement runs $0–$25 in parts. A full drain pump replacement starts from around $150–$230 total with labour. At Mapleland Appliance, our diagnostic fee is $89.9 and we give you a clear quote before any work begins.
What does the E24 error code mean on a Bosch dishwasher?
The E24 code means the drain cycle timed out. The machine ran the drain pump longer than expected without the water level dropping to its target. The most common cause is a clogged filter. The second most common cause is debris wrapped around the drain pump impeller, which allows the motor to run but prevents the impeller from pushing water out. Clean the filter first. If the error returns, check the impeller using the steps in Cause 4 before assuming the pump motor has failed. If E24 and E25 appear together, a jammed impeller is the most likely explanation.
Can I clean the Bosch drain pump impeller myself without replacing the pump?
Yes, and it is worth trying before ordering a replacement pump. On Bosch dishwashers, the drain pump cover is accessible from the front of the machine after removing the outer door panel, kickpad, and insulation layer. Once the cover is removed, you can see and reach the impeller directly. If debris is wrapped around it or lodged against the blades, removing it by hand or with needle-nose pliers often resolves the problem entirely. Try spinning the impeller by hand before and after clearing the debris. If it spins freely after cleaning and the machine drains normally on the next cycle, the pump motor is fine and no parts need replacing. Full steps are in Cause 4 above.
My Bosch dishwasher is new and has never drained. What should I check first?
If your Bosch dishwasher has never drained correctly since installation and it connects to a garbage disposal, check for the disposal knockout plug first. This is a plastic disc inside the disposal’s dishwasher inlet port that must be knocked out before the drain hose is connected. It is a required installation step that gets missed regularly when a disposal and dishwasher are installed in the same visit. The full removal process is in Cause 3 above. If the plug is absent or removing it does not fix the problem, confirm the drain hose has a proper high loop under the counter and is not inserted too deeply into the standpipe.
